2023 Retail Renovation Competition
PROJECT SCOPE: Convert a retail mall location formerly occupied by Yankee Candle into a unique and imaginative children’s clothing store. The final design included a new custom storefront with unique entry points and incorporation of the client’s logo motif. Additional custom features include floor, wall and ceiling finishes, furniture, fixtures, millwork and graphics.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The client has an established presence in the young, active female clothing market, offering sportswear to casual dress at its Altar’d State stores. Tullabee was envisioned as a boutique children’s clothing store at select U.S. locations, aimed at broadening its offerings within its target female demographic.
UNIQUE STORE PLAN/CONCEPT: A mixture of playfulness and sophistication is achieved within the space by incorporating diverse elements to create interest and curiosity, beginning at the front entry and leading to the back wall.
The skewed and articulated angles on the storefront create unique details that mimic the millwork merchandise displays and village graphics. These elements incorporate a playful child-size door alongside the primary entry. From the store’s exterior floor tiles, the colorful palette pervades the space leading into and through the space. A cloud mural on the articulated ceiling planes creates a sense of wonder and awe for children.
Typical 2-D elements like the storefront plane are re-imagined as immersive 3-D interactions. The Tullabee brand’s sunshine motif is rendered as a 3-D piece with light-fixture arrays suspended overhead.
