Gelson’s For Sale?

Parent considers options for high-end California grocery chain

Arden Group Inc. (Compton, Calif.), parent of the upscale Gelson’s Markets supermarket chain, has “initiated a process to explore and evaluate strategic alternatives, which may include a possible sale.”

Gelson’s 16 stores – particularly the ones in Santa Barbara, Pacific Palisades and Newport Beach – have developed a reputation for service, high-end amenities and a prominent clientele.

But, according to The Los Angeles Times, “the Southern California chain has felt pressure from similar rivals Whole Foods Market and Bristol Farms as well as middle-market chains such as Vons, Trader Joe's and Ralphs.”

In the last two years, Gelson's has closed stores in Pasadena and Northridge, though president Rob McDougall said the chain is committed to opening a new branch in Long Beach this year.
