Independent Bookstore to Open in New York … and More Industry News

MANAGEMENT CHANGES
Nazdar SourceOne (Shawnee, Kan.) has promoted Cristi Kimrey to purchasing supervisor. Kimrey will work with suppliers to ensure pricing and product supply objectives are met in her new role.

Architectural Systems Inc. president Nancy Jackson was selected as a board member of BOFFO (New York), an arts and culture nonprofit which encourages collaboration between artists and designers by sponsoring such projects as pop-up art, fashion and architecture installations.

STORE OPENINGS
A new Samsung (Seoul) flagship in Sydney, Australia, has opened just one block from an Apple store, and features a minimalist design, with merchandise laid out on tables and employees in blue polo shirts. The design is already drawing comparisons to Apple, the Sydney Morning Herald reports, though Samsung denies it was influenced by Apple’s retail design.

HH Gregg Appliances & Electronics (Indianapolis) will open a new store in Fairview Heights, Ill., this September, the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

DSW (Columbus, Ohio) opened a new store on Apalachee Parkway at Magnolia in Tallahassee, Fla., this month.

In New York, entrepreneur Lexi Breach plans to open an independent bookstore, Astoria Bookshop, in Queens in early 2013. The store will be the borough’s sole independent bookstore to offer mainstream titles, the New York Daily News reports.

BUSINESS BRIEFS
Carl Hansen & Son (Aarup, Denmark) recently acquired manufacturer P.J. Furniture and Rud. Rasmussen, a Danish art furniture company, and will now include pieces designed by architect Ole Wanscher among its products.

Centiva (Florence, Ala.) was nominated for a Green Corporate Citizen Award by the city of Florence, Ala. Education outreach coordinator Rachel Mansell says, “We nominated Centiva because they are a forward-thinking company that realizes that sustainability and ‘being green’ aren’t just ways to market their brands; they are ways to cut costs, boost profits and help the environment along the way.”

Architectural Systems Inc. (New York) has been named a finalist in the New York Enterprise Report’s 2012 Small Business Awards in the sales and marketing category.
