Carl Kirkland, chairman and founder of Kirkland Inc. (Jackson, Tenn.), the 319-store specialty home décor retailer, has been appointed chairman emeritus in connection with his retirement from full-time service. President and ceo Robert Alderson has been elected chairman.

Kirkland will continue to serve on the company’s board of directors.

Ralph Parks, retired ceo of Footaction USA — now part of Foot Locker Inc. (New York) — has been named to the board.

“Since completing our initial public offering in July 2002, we have strengthened our management team with key hires in virtually every area of the business,” Kirkland commented. “With such a talented management team and . . . solid additions to our board, Kirkland’s is poised to benefit from the strongest leadership it has ever had. The time is right for me to step back and enjoy more personal time.”

Kirkland’s, founded in Tennessee in 1966, has grown beyond the Southeast region and currently operates in 37 states.
