Lego Develops Brick Made from Recycled Plastic

Lego (Billund, Denmark) has released a prototype of its classic brick made from recycled plastic sourced from plastic bottles, according to Reuters. The toy maker expects to begin selling the bricks in 18 to 24 months.

“We are super excited about this breakthrough,” said Tim Brooks, Lego’s VP of environmental responsibility. “We want our products to have a positive impact on the planet, not just with the play they inspire, but also with the materials we use.”

Nearly 150 engineers have spent the past six years testing alternate materials ranging from plant-based to recycled plastics. Lego uses 100,00 tons of plastic in its products annually. A one-liter plastic bottle can produce about ten Lego bricks.
