Magazine cancels Internet retail plans

Published

on

InStyle magazine has cancelled plans to begin an Internet retail site. The e-commerce proposal, scheduled to launch in the beginning of 2001, was deemed too expensive by Don Logan, ceo, Time Warner Inc., (the magazine's publisher), and America Online Inc.'s president and coo Robert Pittman.

InStyle intended to offer fashion accessories on the site and operate independently, managing its own inventory and distribution. The magazine, which has a guaranteed circulation of 1.3 million, prints phone numbers for readers to purchase its featured clothes and accessories. And this month, it unveiled a catalog service for readers to buy products through a commissioned fulfillment center.
