Famed fashion designer Oscar de la Renta has died at the age of 82. The New York Times reports the cause of death as “complications from cancer,” with which de la Renta was diagnosed in 2006. Born in the Dominican Republic and trained as a painter in Madrid, de la Renta launched his own line in 1963 and was one of the first designer labels to be carried at Saks Fifth Avenue. De la Renta, whose couture gowns have been lauded for their femininity and timelessness, is best known for dressing A-list actresses, socialites and every U.S. first lady since Jacqueline Kennedy.

Earlier this month, de la Renta created the new position of creative director at his company for Peter Copping, former artistic director for Nina Ricci. Copping was to assume the post in early November and work closely with de la Renta, according to CNBC. At the time of Copping’s appointment, de la Renta said, “My hope is that, in leading this selection, and actively participating in the transition, I can ensure the right design future for our company and brand.”

Beyond de la Renta’s signature collections, the company grew into a successful purveyor of luxury goods including shoes, accessories, jewelry, home decor and fragrances.
