ISP/VM+SD International Store Design Competition Winner
Specialty Store, Sales Area Under 1500 Sq. Ft.
First Place
Patronik Designs Jewelry Gallery houses both a jeweler's workshop studio and the work of owner/jeweler Nick Kosturos, who hoped to express his store's uniqueness as a place where his art is both viewed and sold.
Miroglio Architecture + Design (Oakland, Calif.) conceived the new space as a “prequel” to the former space (recently destroyed by fire), what would have been revealed if the walls of the previous space had been removed. Elements that were only suggested, or were two-dimensional, could now be articulated in three-dimensional form.
The store's form is an amalgamation of three distinct “ideals” that comprise the jeweler's image of himself: a “white box” art gallery forming the overall framework; an ancient reliquary or catacomb where precious items are stored (manifested in the reliquary wall in the center of the store that leans in like the side of a cave wall and features custom display fixtures within the niches); and a jeweler's workshop in the rear of the gallery.
All the suspended light fixtures in the store were custom-designed and handcrafted for the space by a local artisan.
