When designers approached the concept of Peach’s Corner Café in Aspen, Colo., they were dealt two main instructions: provide a completely new experience, and do it quickly.

Tasked with turning a dated, dark space into a welcoming, social spot on a prominent corner, Rowland + Broughton Architecture and Urban Design (Denver, Colo.) set out to create a clean, open space that showcases the beauty of the outdoors and the friendliness of the community.

“We’re in Aspen – when you’re in a natural environment you definitely want to be able to have a sense of place,” says Designer/Project Manager Jason E. Goldberg.

Designers used light woods, a fruit-based color palette and white light fixtures to create a bright, inviting atmosphere. Differing seating heights – low community tables in the middle of the room and high-top counters against the windows – add a more social feel. Industrial lighting and a variety of glass, chalkboard and butcher paper menu boards convey simplicity, while a glass bakery display and maple point-of-sale counter show off high-end grab-and-go products and locally made pastries.

Differences in floor heights and the wear and tear of Aspen’s winter prompted designers to use vinyl flooring, which also match the wood veneer chairs, rounded to resemble peach pits, and butcher block tabletops.

“We wanted to keep a really clean palette, really concentrating on the food and your surroundings outside,” says Goldberg.
