Court rules Polo Association can use logo, despite Ralph Lauren challenge

A New York federal court ruled that Jordache Enterprises (New York) and The United States Polo Association (Lexington, Ky.) could use a polo horse and rider as their logo for an advertising and marketing campaign.

The use of the pony had been challenged in 2000 by Polo Ralph Lauren (New York), which had been using a polo pony as its logo for more than 30 years.

“Our goal was to vindicate our right to use an active polo player trademark,” said David Cummings, president of USPA Properties. “Since 1984, the U.S. Polo Association has been trying to coexist with Polo Ralph Lauren, but it appears that they wanted nothing more than a monopoly on the sport. That has ended today with this ruling.”
