Publix (Lakeland, Fla.) has announced it’s planning to open a hybrid supermarket concept that combines elements of its standard format and its GreenWise Markets, which emphasize organic and natural foods. “We’re going to take best of Publix GreenWise Markets and infuse that into a traditional Publix supermarket,” says Publix spokeswoman Shannon Patten.

The new format, which will carry the Publix nameplate, is expected to be about 15,000 square feet larger than the average Publix location and will include a prepared food section and cafe.

The supermarket chain recently introduced hangtag signage that identifies organic, natural and earth-friendly products on its shelves to help customers identify such products quickly. Publix currently operates three GreenWise Markets in Boca Raton, Tampa and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., with a total fleet of more than 1000 supermarkets.
