Retailers Ban Rolling Stone “Bomber” Cover

CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Kmart among those who won’t carry the issue

Several retailers have announced they will not carry the current issue of Rolling Stone on their shelves, the one that features the Boston Marathon bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

CVS/Pharmacy (Woonsocket, R.I.) and The Walgreen Co. (Deerfield, Ill.) were among the first to announce their newsstand ban of the issue that many feel glamorizes the suspect. The photo shows him with long hair and a trim mustache and in an Armani Exchange shirt.

Later, Tedeschi Food Shops (Rockland, Mass.), a New England chain of 188 stores, said that while the company “supports the need to share the news with everyone,” it “cannot support actions that serve to glorify the evil actions of anyone.”

Kmart Corp. (Troy, Mich.) and Rite Aid Corp. (E. Pennsboro Twp., Pa.) have since joined the boycott.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has sent a letter to the magazine objecting that the cover “rewards a terrorist with celebrity treatment.” And Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, responding to a question from reporters, said: “The cover is out of taste, I think.”

Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to 30 federal charges.
