Peter McMahon, former chief operating officer of Loblaw Cos. Ltd. (Toronto), has been named ceo of Shopko Stores Operating Co. LLC (Green Bay, Wis.).

The hiring concluded a 13-month search begun when Paul Jones resigned to join Payless Holdings (Topeka, Kan.) as ceo. Mike Bettiga has held the post on an interim basis. He will remain with Shopko as executive vp and chief operating officer.

At Loblaw’s, Canada’s largest supermarket organization, McMahon had been responsible for the supply chain, information technology, human resources, labor relations, merchandising, store operations and loss prevention functions. He had previously held management positions with Walmart Stores Inc. (Bentonville, Ark.) in Germany and Japan and with Tesco Plc (Cheshunt, U.K.) in central Europe.

Shopko operates 350 stores in 22 Midwestern, Mountain, North Central and Pacific Northwest states. More than half of the units bear the Shopko Hometown nameplate.
