Subway to Bloomingdale’s

Retailer re-opens historic subterranean entrance to its expanded men’s store

Bloomingdale’s, the New York-based fashion chain of Macy’s Inc. (Cincinnati), will hold a ceremony this morning to re-open the historic metro-level subway entrance at its flagship store on Lexington Avenue and 59th Street.

The Lexington Avenue subway line was opened in 1915 with a stop directly underneath the store. Shortly after the line opened, the Bloomingdale brothers mounted an advertising campaign boasting that “all cars transfer to Bloomingdale's.”

The entrance will lead into the newly expanded men’s store. On hand for the 10:15 a.m. ribbon-cutting, in addition to Bloomingdale’s executives, will be Robert Lieber, New York’s deputy Mayor for Economic Development, and Howard H. Roberts Jr., president of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) New York City Transit.
