Urban Outfitters Inc. (Philadelphia) has announced plans for a new store in downtown Los Angeles.

The retailer, known for choosing interesting locations, will moved into a two-level, 10,000-square-foot space in the old Rialto Theater on South Broadway, built in 1917. The building has been vacant for several decades.

The move is seen as a as a big win for Bringing Back Broadway, which has been attempting to revive the downtown LA corridor.

“Urban Outfitters understands the market and knows where Broadway is going, and I thank them for planting their flag and saying they want to be part of Bringing Back Broadway,” said Los Angeles city councilman José Huizar, who is chairman of Bringing Back Broadway.

“The Rialto movie palace building still has incredible character,” said John Hauser, Urban Outfitters’ ceo of brand experience. “You can feel the history when you are there.”
