Walmart Lobbying Raises Eyebrows in Indian Parliament

The U.S. Senate disclosed that Walmart Stores Inc. (Bentonville, Ark.) spent $25 million on lobbying efforts since 2008, including $3 million to gain market access in India, Women’s Wear Daily reports. Members of the Indian Parliament have expressed concerns that the retailer – which has sought to expand into India – influenced a recent Parliament vote to open the country to foreign-direct-investment (FDI) in the country’s retailer sector. The Economic Times reports that members of the Communist Party of India have called for an investigation to determine whether Walmart’s spending included bribes for members of the Indian Parliament.
