Muji (Tokyo) announced that it plans to open large-format standalone stores in India through a joint venture between its parent company, Ryohin Keikaku Co. Ltd. (Tokyo), and Reliance Brands (Mumbai, India).

The stores are expected to range from 6000 to 10,000 square feet and include the retailer’s full product line, including fashion, housewares, beauty and stationery items.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the company has spent the past few years focusing on expanding into international markets, and Muji will be the first major Japanese retailer to enter the country.

“India is our next big Asian market with immense growth potential,” said Satoru Matsuzaki, Ryohin Keikaku’s president and representative director. “India’s young, educated and cosmopolitan population gives Muji a ready cache of prospective customers.”
