A letter from the founder of Selfridges, Harry Gordon Selfridge, was featured in VMSD’s very first issue (then named The Show Window), published November, 1897, under the direction of founding editor, L. Frank Baum. A then-employee of Marshall Field’s, Selfridge wrote: “I am glad to see a publication started which is devoted to the interests of window dressing, etc. I cannot help thinking that it will get a hearty response from the merchants of the United States. You will please enter the name of Marshall Field & Co. upon your subscription list.”
