To promote the sale of customized Converse Chuck Taylors to benefit the 1Hund(RED) organization, designers at Checkland Kindleysides (Leicester, U.K.) sought to reflect the creativity of the artists’ original shoe designs in a gallery-like setting – with a twist.

“We decided to use masking tape to create a more relaxed way of denoting each artist’s name in relation to the shoes that they created,” says Matt Beal, senior designer at Checkland Kindleysides.

The every-day material was also used by illustrator Kay Van-Bellen to create a ‘tongue-in-cheek” depiction of London, which adorned the red-painted walls of the gallery and temporary selling space.

Competition judges were impressed by the use of an everyday material to make such a creative statement. “It takes you to an imaginary place with a mix of art,” says Steve McGowan, one of this year’s judges and executive creative director at Landor (Cincinnati).
