Bye-bye, bland chairs, sofas and benches. Hello, bold! Retailers are using furniture to dress up their spaces and new trends point to oversized pieces in notice-me hues of red, aubergine, green and rich cream as a way of making a strong impact within a space.

“Furniture seems to have taken center stage in the design process and is increasingly becoming an important factor in the success of a venue,” says Sat Garg, design principal for AkarStudios (Santa Monica, Calif.). “Retailers are looking for pieces that are noticeable and provide an identity for the space.”

And if another shade of “green” is more your style, Garg says more manufacturers are offering upholstery fabrics with high recycled content in a better variety of patterns and colors.
