Amazon.com (Seattle) has launched an online computer store, www.amazon.com/computers, where browsers can purchase new and refurbished technology. The site carries brands like Apple, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Toshiba. Discount prices are available on used software, sold by Essex Technology Group, Overstock.com and TechSmart Inc.

The new e-store features on-site computer help, an advanced search tool, side-by-side comparisons of merchandise and a buying-advisory tool that recommends computers based on budget constraints and anticipated uses. In celebration of the launch, the Amazon computer store is offering free standard shipping on all new notebook computer orders through Labor Day this year.
