Walmart (Bentonville, Ark.) will pay 100 percent of college tuition and books for its associates beginning Aug. 16, reports CNBC. The move comes as a result of changes in the economy and job market.

The retail, also the largest private U.S. employer, will discontinue the current $1-per-day fee for workers participating in its Live Better U education program. The new plan will cost Walmart almost $1 billion over the next five years.

About 1.5 million part-time and full-time Walmart and Sam’s Club employees will be eligible for the program.
