American Apparel Inc.’s (Los Angeles) chief business development officer Marty Staff has left the company after less than a year at the post. Staff joined the company in March and was considered a high-profile hiring to help jump-start sales at the debt-laden company.

During his brief tenure with American Apparel, Staff introduced new shop-in-shops in department stores in France and the U.K., and was working with Bloomingdale’s to add American Apparel shops in the U.S., reports Women’s Wear Daily.

“Dov is a one-man band, and I don’t think I realized how singular that vision is,” Staff told WWD of Dov Charney, who is founder, chairman and ceo of American Apparel. “When I joined, I don’t think I realized how actively Dov manages every part of the company — from design to IT to marketing to finance. All roads lead through Dov. No judgment on that, but I think I was used to something more collaborative.”

Staff’s career includes serving as president and ceo of JA Apparel Corp., owner of the Joseph Abboud brand, as well as president and ceo of Hugo Boss Fashions Inc.
