A&P Files for Bankruptcy

Blames heavy debt, costs of a largely union work force and tough competition for its financial woes

A&P, also known as The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The Montvale, N.J., company says that it could not complete its turnaround plan without filing for bankruptcy protection.

According to the filing, the grocer listed about $2.5 billion in assets and $3.2 billion in liabilities.

The company owns A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Fresh, Pathmark and Food Basics grocery stores.
