Big Lots Inc. (Columbus, Ohio) has named retail veteran John Martin executive vp, merchandising. He will report to Michael Potter, ceo of the 1400-store closeout retailing chain.

Martin will oversee all areas of merchandising for the company, including merchandise planning and allocation. “As we continue to execute on our company's strategic initiatives including assembling a strong team of experts and building the Big Lots brand, we are attracting the best and brightest talent from within the retail industry,” Potter said.

Martin, a 30-year retail veteran, was most recently president of Garden Ridge Corp., Houston-based decorating-accessories retailer. He had previously been president and coo of Michaels Stores Inc. (Irving, Texas), president of OfficeMax Inc. (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and divisional merchandise manager with Federated Department Stores (Cincinnati).
