Books-A-Million Reports $5.8 Million Q2 Net Loss

Same-store sales dip 0.3 percent

Books-A-Million Inc. (Birmingham, Ala.) has reported a second-quarter net loss that jumped from $3 million to $5.8 million — the company observed a same-quarter loss last year.

Net sales slipped from $108.3 million to $107.9 million, while same-store sales fell 0.3 percent.

Retailing Today reported that the company’s costs and expenses rose, or stayed flat, despite falling revenues. Also included in the report was President and CEO Terrance Finley’s statement, which mentioned that, despite the success of Harper Lee’s “Go Set a Watchman” and E.L. James’s “Grey,” this year’s releases were not able to measure up to the success of last year’s top sellers, John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars,” Veronica Roth’s “Divergent series” and Todd Burpo’s “Heaven is for Real.”
