Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (Bentonville, Ark.) has opened its first outlet in Beijing, testing a members-only Sam's Club warehouse in the Chinese capital ahead of the planned launch of three of its Supercenter stores there.

The new warehouse club, in suburban western Beijing, offers about 4000 products. Shoppers pay 150 yuan ($18) to join.

Thus far, Wal-Mart has opened a total of 26 outlets in China. The company also plans to bring three of its Supercenter stores to Beijing, which will offer everything from groceries to clothing.

Retail sales in China, the world's fastest-growing major economy, grew 8.8 percent in 2002, and the government is aiming for 10 percent growth this year.
