British designer Alexander McQueen, born Lee Alexander McQueen, has been found dead at his home in London.

A company spokesperson confirmed his death, saying, “It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.”

McQueen was born in London’s East End and grew to become one of fashion’s most respected and accomplished designers. He apprenticed on Savile Row, where his clients included Prince Charles and Mikhail Gorbachev, before attending Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. His graduation collection caught the attention of stylist Isabella Blow and the two formed a strong friendship. During his career, McQueen’s collections evolved from designs that relied largely on shock factor to more mainstream when he was chosen to succeed John Galliano at Givenchy in 1996.

He was named England's designer of the year four times between 1996 and 2003.
