Began in 1946, selling shoes to support his jazz career

Donald V. Siebert, former chairman and ceo of JCPenney, died today at the age of 77 in Murray Hill, N.J.

Siebert joined the Plano, Texas-based retail organization as a shoe salesman in 1946, to keep his family afloat during a hiatus in his career as a jazz musician. This led to a 37-year career with the company, during which Siebert was able to climb the corporate ladder from salesman to ceo.
