Douglas Tompkins, Founder of North Face, Dies

72-year-old passes away after kayaking accident

Douglas Tompkins, founder of the North Face Inc. (Alameda, Calif.) and Esprit Holdings Ltd. (Ratingen, Germany) passed away Tuesday after a kayaking accident in Chile. The 72-year-old conservationist and clothing retail veteran had been kayaking in the Patagonia region when his kayak overturned in heavy waves on General Carrera Lake.

The New York Times reports that Tompkins was flown to Coyhaique Regional Hospital via helicopter for hypothermia where he died.

Five others were also in kayaks that capsized on the expedition, but no one else was seriously injured.
