George Abrams Dies

Typeface designer created logos for Altman's, Godiva

George Abrams, the artist and type designer who created original logos for New York retailer B. Altman and Godiva Chocolates, died earlier this month in Manhasset, N.Y. He was 81.

Abrams'credits also included the original cover logo for Sports Illustrated magazine in 1954, and new cover logos for House Beautiful in 1949, the Saturday Evening Post in 1965 and Newsweek in 1968. He created logos for Ballantine beer and ale, the Singer Co. and Reed & Barton. He taught lettering and typeface design at the Parsons School of Design, the New School for Social Research and Columbia University Teachers College (all in New York). His company was called Alphabets Inc.
