Haggen to Close 27 Stores

Majority of closures in California

Haggen (Bellingham, Wash.), an independent grocery chain in the Pacific Northwest, has announced it will be closing 27 stores in the next 60 days.

Locations affected include Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington stores, but the majority will be closed around the San Diego and Los Angeles areas in California.

The Seattle Times reports most of the stores closing were part of the 146 locations that Haggen bought from Albertsons (Boise, Idaho) and Safeway (Pleasanton, Calif.) after merging earlier this year. The company, which had eyed expansion, will now operate 137 stores, down from its post-merger total of 164.
