Holiday Sales Project 2.4 Percent Gain

Fewer days, weekends this year will lead to earlier promotions

Retail sales for the 2013 holiday season have been projected to increase 2.4 percent, according to a report by Bloomberg News.

Stores are already offering earlier promotions amid a shorter shopping period. With Thanksgiving falling on November 28 this year, there are only 25 days between Black Friday (November 29) and Christmas Eve, and four weekends. Last year, when sales rose 3 percent, there were 31 days and five weekends.

At the same time, said ShopperTrak, a Chicago-based retail researcher, customers are expected to visit fewer stores in November and December, with traffic decreasing 1.4 percent from the same period a year earlier.

“Although the economy continues to recover slowly, consumers remain cautious about spending and are not ready to splurge,” ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin said in the statement.
