Kohl’s Department Stores (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) will open nine new stores in five states by the end of this month, a major step toward its goal of adding 30 locations this year. This first wave of locations being added in Maryland, Mississippi, New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania will bring the company’s portfolio to 1,067 stores in 49 states.

The specialty department store chain also rolled out aggressive renovation plans. Kevin Mansell, Kohl’s chairman, said in a news release that 85 stores will be remodeled in 2010, a 66 percent increase over the number of renovation in 2009.
