Pathmark reports income hike for 4Q

Published

on

Pathmark Stores Inc. (Carteret, N.J.) said its fiscal fourth quarter net income rose 22 percent, as it benefited from merchandising changes and cost-cutting.

Sales for the quarter rose 1 percent. Same-store sales rose 1.6 percent.

The 142-unit supermarket chain said the sales growth came despite continuing challenging market conditions. It said its overall results were helped by expense controls, a change in its advertising schedule, investments in new stores and store renovations.

Pathmark, which operates in four states — Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania — briefly operated under Chapter 11 bankruptcy in mid-2000, emerging after two months as a public company and $1 billion lighter in debt.
