McDonald's Corp. (Oak Brook, Ill.) reports global comparable sales growth of 3.1 percent in May. By segment, sales grew 2.4 percent in the U.S.; 2.3 percent in Europe; and 4.3 percent in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

“McDonald's ability to connect with consumers and deliver the menu choices, everyday affordability and experience that is in tune with today's lifestyles has been the cornerstone of our ongoing sales momentum,” says ceo Jim Skinner. “The modernization of our restaurants, coupled with menu innovation and enhanced accessibility of our brand continue to deliver the unique McDonald's experience that is resonating with our customers around the world.”

System-wide sales for the month increased 12 percent, or 4.7 percent in constant currencies.

The company says the national launch of Frozen Strawberry Lemonade and the popularity of its Fruit & Maple Oatmeal and signature beverages helped drive up sales in the U.S.

McDonald's operates more than 30,000 locations worldwide in 117 countries.
