Macy’s Inc. (Cincinnati) has announced that Michael Gould, chairman and ceo of its New York-based Bloomingdale’s division, will step down after 22 years at the helm.

Tony Spring, currently Bloomingdale’s president and chief operating officer, will replace him on Feb. 1, 2014.

“I have been thinking about this for a long time,” Gould, who turns 71 next month, told Women’s Wear Daily. “There are a lot of things I would like to do. I love to teach. I would like to give more of myself in the nonprofit world. Retirement is not in my vocabulary.”

Spring is Gould’s hand-picked successor, a Bloomingdale’s lifer who began in 1987, at 22, as an executive trainee in the White Plains, N.Y., store. WWD reports that Spring was the first person Gould promoted at Bloomingdale’s, in 1991, though previous ceo Marvin Traub had felt he was too young.

In his previous role, Spring concentrated on elevating the customer experience, helping associates build relationships with customers and omnichannel initiatives.
