Electronics Boutique adding 200 stores

Published

Video gaming retailer Electronics Boutique (West Chester, Pa.) plans to open 200 new stores this year. In order to concentrate on that expansion effort, the retailer's parent company is discontinuing operations of its 29-store EB Kids division and selling its 22-store BC Sports Collectibles unit.

Electronics Boutique Holdings Corp. has about 940 Electronics Boutique stores, most of them in malls. The company said it expects to convert about a dozen EB Kids stores to the Electronics Boutique format by June 30, and close the rest. Meanwhile, the retailer is seeking a buyer for BC Sports Collectibles.

“These strategic measures reflect management's desire to focus its energy and resources exclusively on the significant growth opportunities in the video game industry, especially in light of the results we achieved in our core business in a challenging retailenvironment this past year,” Jeffrey Griffiths, president and ceo of Electronics Boutique Holdings Corp., said in a statement.
