Nordstrom Strong in August

Specialty retailer shows 8 percent sales gain for the month

Nordstrom Inc. (Seattle) reported an 8.2 percent increase in preliminary sales for the four-week period ending Aug. 28, 2004. Same-store sales increased 7.2 percent.

The retailer said the strongest performing geographic regions for the month were the Southwest and Southern states. The strongest merchandise categories were accessories, women’s shoes and women’s designer apparel.

Preliminary year-to-date sales are up 12 percent and year-to-date same-store sales have increased 9.2 percent.

As of August 31, the fashion specialty retailer operates 93 full-line stores, 49 Nordstrom Rack stores, five Faconnable boutiques, one freestanding shoe store and one clearance store. Nordstrom also operates 31 international Faconnable boutiques, primarily in Europe. It has 19.29 million square feet of retail, 2.3 percent more than it had a year ago.
