Department store retailer reports sales down for October, 3Q, year-to-date

The May Department Stores Co. (St. Louis) reported a 2.4 percent decrease in net sales for the four-week period ended Nov. 1, 2003. Same-store sales decreased 4.2 percent (a 3.5 percent decrease excluding the remaining 32 Lord & Taylor stores that May previously announced it will divest).

For the third quarter of fiscal 2003, net sales were down 0.5 percent. Same-store sales were down 2.4 percent (2.1 percent with the 32-store adjustment).

For the first nine months of fiscal 2003, net sales were down 2.9 percent. Same-store sales were down 4.8 percent (4.6 percent adjusted).

During October, May opened a Kaufmann's store at The Waterfront in Pittsburgh and a Famous-Barr store at Biscayne Mall in Columbia, Mo. May's Bridal Group opened four new David's Bridal stores during October, for a total of 20 stores year-to-date. An additional 10 David's stores will open by year-end.
