Peet’s Coffee & Tea (Emeryville, Calif.) today opened its first Washington, D.C.-area store. The coffee shop is located on Pennsylvania Ave. near the White House. Nearly two dozen additional Peet’s stores will open in a phased rollout throughout the D.C. market this year. The company says Washington will become the company’s second largest retail market outside of California and its biggest East Coast retail footprint.

“This is an exciting time in Peet’s history as Washington, D.C. will officially become our second biggest home outside of California,” said Dave Burwick, president and ceo of Peet’s Coffee and Tea, in a statement. The company said its Washington, D.C. stores will feature a contemporary aesthetic, while simultaneously showcasing images that chronicle the company’s nearly 50-year history. In the Metro D.C., market, Peet’s is partnering with two local bakeries, Baguette Republic and Hawthorne Fine Breakfast Pastry to provide food items in stores. Peet’s will also serve salads, sandwiches and fruit and cheese plates.

Peet’s entered its largest expansion phase last year, adding 29 stores in the Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Detroit; and Pittsburgh areas. In addition to the Washington D.C. stores, Peet’s will add 20 stores to the Chicago market, bringing the company’s total to nearly 3,000 stores by the end of the year.
