Staples-Office Depot Merger Denied

FTC intervenes for second time

Published

on

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced that it will challenge the proposed merge between Staples Inc. (Framingham, Mass.) and Office Depot Inc. (Boca Raton, Fla.) on grounds that the merge would eliminate beneficial competition within the industry and would result in higher prices for customers, reports The Wall Street Journal. The FTC decision to oppose the merger was unanimous.

The companies announced in a press release that they intend to contest the decision, on grounds that the acquisition would benefit customers, employees and shareholders alike. They said that the combined company would generate significant savings that would result in lower prices for customers.

This is the second time that the FTC has intervened to stop a merge between Staples and Office Depot. The first was in 1997.
