Supervalu Sells 877 Stores

Supervalu Inc. (Eden Prairie, Minn.) has sold five of its supermarket chains to an investor group led by Cerberus Capital Management LP in a $3.3 billion deal, according to Reuters. The move impacts 877 locations which comprise the Albertsons, Acme, Shaw’s, Jewel-Osco and Star Market chains, along with in-store pharmacies under the Sav-on and Osco names.

The sale is expected to be finalized in March. Supervalu will retain ownership of a food wholesaler working with 1950 U.S. stores, 1300 Save-A-Lot stores, and regional chains including Farm Fresh, Cubs, Shoppers, Hornbacher’s and Shop ‘n Save, Reuters reports.
