When developing the 400-square-foot prototype for TerraVida, a new retail coffee concept in Seattle, the retailer wanted to differentiate itself from big-name competitors with a concept that focuses on the small coffee bean grower, the community and, as the name suggests, a strong connection between earth and life. A team of interior and graphic designers worked with a branding consultant and the Haggen team (owners of TerraVida) to come up with a colorful, organic, graphic-driven prototype space at the TOP Foods store in Shoreline, Wash.

The earthy design features clay-colored walls that allow for an expression of the wood-surrounded “fossils” that penetrate the surface and display found objects of modern discoveries. “Life” is conveyed through curving layers of brightly colored materials that explain the functions involved in creating each cup of coffee. And, at the entrance, a funnel-shaped focal element, or “totem,” graphically displays Earth on one half and Life on the other, telling the TerraVida story.
