The TJX Cos. (Framingham, Mass.) has extended the employment contract of ceo Carol Meyrowitz for two years, as part of the discount retailer’s succession planning. Meyrowitz became ceo in January 2007.

TJX also promoted Ernie Herrman to president. He has served as senior executive vp and group president since August 2008. The retailer also promoted Nan Stutz to top executive in charge of the HomeGoods and TJX Canada groups, and Michael MacMillan to head of the Marmaxx Group.

“We will continue to reap the benefits of Carol’s proven talents and track record as an outstanding executive and visionary leader while Ernie Herrman, with his demonstrated abilities in merchandising, operations and overall business leadership and execution, takes on a bigger role,” says Bernard Cammarata, chairman of TJX, in a statement.

TJX operates 2700 stores worldwide under the T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods banners. In December, the company announced it would close its underperforming A.J. Wright chain.
