For the inaugural World Basketball Festival in New York last year, Nike hired a tattoo artist to create illustrations of current basketball stars. Portland, Ore.-based LIT Workshop was tasked with turning that 2-D story into a 3-D retail space, complete with a graphics package, T-shirt zone, shoe gallery and Jordon Brand shop-in-shop.
And the inspiration for those giant basketball figurines soaring above in Niketown New York’s five-story atrium? “We thought of the idea of Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day parade,” says Damon Johnstun, LIT Workshop creative director. “In this case, the illustrations are more spindly so we did the figurines instead of balloons.”
