Lee Scott, ceo of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (Bentonville, Ark.), said the British government should investigate the 30.5 percent local food market enjoyed by Tesco, its main rival in the U.K. marketplace.

Scott said, in an interview with The Sunday Times of London, “As you get over 30 percent and higher, I am sure there is a point where government is compelled to intervene.”

Asda, the Wal-Mart-owned hypermarket operation in Europe, has a 16.7 percent share of Britain’s food market, a distant second to Tesco.
