Walmart Stores Inc. (Bentonville, Ark.) has appointed William Simon, chief operating officer, to a new post as ceo of its U.S. stores division. Simon replaces Eduardo Castro-Wright, who will take over Internet operations and global sourcing for the world’s largest retailer.

The effort comes as Walmart tries to reverse a series of sluggish sales. Same-store sales in the U.S. have declined for four straight quarters.

Simon has been the chief operating officer for U.S. stores since April 2007. Castro-Wright formerly headed the company’s Mexico business.
