The Walgreen Co. (Deerfield, Ill.) has confirmed that it laid off several employees at its corporate headquarters and will continue to make adjustments to its workforce “to optimize our organization,” according to a company spokesman.

The nation’s largest drug store chain told the Chicago Tribune that the job cuts spanned the organization, including workers in human resources, finance, information technology and others.

The spokesman declined to provide a figure or say whether the layoffs were complete, but said, “Like all companies, we’re constantly looking to optimize our organization and drive greater efficiency and effectiveness.”

The retailer recently completed a quarter in which its net income was up 86 percent and its revenue rose 5.1 percent.
