Zara Opens SoHo Flagship

New eco-efficient store located in historic district

Zara (Arteixo, Spain) has opened a new flagship store in a part of New York’s SoHo neighborhood that is known as the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District. The area boasts widespread use of cast iron in its building material. Housed in a building erected in 1878 by architect John B. Snook, the store pays homage to that heritage with a dark black, cast-iron exterior.

The Zara architecture team oversaw the store’s design and made efforts to uncover and maintain its original landmark features including interior brick walls. They also sought to design an eco-efficient store, which will operate with 30-percent less energy and 50-percent less water than conventional stores.

The 47,361-square-foot store includes three floors of retail space where the retailer is able to showcase its complete Spring/Summer collection for women, men and kids, reports a press release.
